Abstract

251,412. Holt, H. E. S. March 28, 1925. Parachutes.-Spring means for assisting the opening of a parachute comprises one or more spring hoops attached to the parachute fabric and capable of being folded under tension in the form of a figure 8 when the parachute is packed. The invention is described as applied to a pilot parachute, two steel hoops a, b connected together at right angles being used. Alternatively, the two hoops may be formed from a single length of wire. The hoop a is stitched all round to the fabric, but the other hoop b is stitched only to the crown of the parachute and is covered with a fabric diaphragm to prevent the lines from becoming entangled in it. In packing the parachute, by applying pressure with a slight twisting action at the crossing points c, c' both hoops are caused to take the form of a figure 8 as shown in Fig. 4. The four loops thus formed pack flat in the parachute case but retain this form only so long as they are restrained by the cover of the case. The Provisional Specification describes a method of packing the main and pilot parachutes in a container and means for releasing them. An inwardly projecting border of stiff fabric is provided on the container, the main parachute being packed under this border and then covered by a flap. The cover of the container tends to spring open when closed and is released when a number of bolts passing through lugs on the cover and the container are withdrawn by the pull on a lanyard. A slip coupling is provided on the aeronaut's harness for releasing the lanyard as soon as the bolts are withdrawn.
