Parachutes.- Parachute apparatus comprising pilot and main parachutes packed in a container, adapted to be fixed to the person of an aeronaut, and provided with fastening means released by a static cord attached to the aircraft, has multiplying gear between the static cord and the fastening to give the cord a mechanical advantage when releasing the fastening. A container a has flaps b secured by a loop e passed through eyelets iu some of the flaps and over a conical pin f on a plate g on the outermost flap, or fastenings as described in Specification 256,735 may be used. A wire h hinged at h<1> is normally held down over the end of the pin f by a pin i passing through pillars i<1> on the plate g. This pin can be withdrawn to release the fastening by a cord c passed through guides t, u on the container and shoulder strap to a fnger ring c<1>, or by a cord o passing through the guide t. The cord o is wound upon and secured to the smaller drum l, Fig. 3, of a compound drum k, l contained in a casing j on the parachute container, the static cord d from the aircraft being fastened to a wire cable d' secured to the larger drum k. The end of the cable d<1> has a head fitting within a recess k<1> in the drum so that it is automatically detached when the recess comes opposite a guide slot p in the casing. A stop r on the drum limits its rotation. The apparatus is set by turning the drum by a key applied to the end of a projecting spindle m until a coloured sector s shows beneath an opening in the cover. A pocket v is provided for the static cord d. Levers or lazytongs may be used instead of the compound drum.
