Parachute apparatus for retarding aircraft comprises a parachute stowed in a container, together with its rigging lines, means for maintaining the container normally closed, and an intermediate cable secured at one end to the rear of the aircraft and connected at its other end to the rigging lines of the parachute, this cable being detachably mounted upon the container and serving when the latter is thrown from the aircraft, to open the container for extraction of the parachute by continued pull of the cable upon the rigging lines. The container comprises a rectangular compartment 11 housing a main parachute and having folded, overlapping sides and ends, extensions of the ends being formed with loops 13 that pass through apertures in the overlapping side portions. Rigging lines 16 attached to the parachute pass outside the compartment 11 and are looped in the loops 13 and then attached bv a buckle 20 to an intermediate line 18 secured in pockets 21 attached to a flap 17. A further flap 22 is loosely folded against the compartment 11 to house a pilot parachute 24 and the pack is completed by wrapping the flap 17 around the compartment 11 and the pilot parachute and securing an eyelet fastening 25 by the end of a cord 28 secured to the cord 18 by a shackle I!) fastened to the rear end of the aircraft structure. When the closed container shown in Fig. 3 is thrown manually or by remotely controlled mechanism from the aircraft the fastening 25 is released and the flaps 17 and 22 open, the parachute 24 acting as a drogue to release the cord 18 from the pockets 21 and the rigging lines 16 from the loops 13 thus permitting the compartment 11 to open and release the main braking parachute.
