Abstract

140,460. Ballonh³llen Ges. Feb. 20, 1918, [Convention date]. Parachutes.-A parachute a is folded, as indicated in Fig. 5, in a flat partly-open condition to facilitate opening, and is provided with inner stays c, Fig. 1, connected at a<1> to the parachute fabric and at a<2> to the main stays or rigging b, whereby the parachute, when spread, is maintained in a flatter curvature than usual. The speed of descent may be varied by means of a disk i threaded on the stavs c, so that it may be carried upwards by the air pressure to close the central aperture x, or be drawn downwards therefrom bv the aviator bv means of cords n attached to a handle o. The parachute is packed in a box d open at the underside, and is retained therein by rods f hinged to a central member e and engaging spring clips g<1> at the rim of the box. To prevent entanglement of the stays b, they are enclosed by a bag g lightly attached to the box; or they may be formed into loops s which are strung on the rods f.
