Abstract

Parachutes; aerostats.-A parachute is opened and maintained open by compressed air or gas discharged from a container suspended in the parachute, when released by the user or by automatic means. A cylindrical container 2, Figs. 1 and 2, is packed with the parachute envelope and is attached to the central opening by cords. The container is surrounded by a perforated casing 5 to distribute the air or gas upwardly and laterally when a series of cocks on automatically-regulated valves 6 are opened by a pull on a chain 12. The valves 6 have a diaphragm 7, Fig. 4, acted upon by the pressure in the container to tend to close a valve 9 against the action of a spring 8. A modification is described in which an inflatable tube at the periphery of the parachute encloses two small compressed-air containers having valves at each end so that the tube is distended when the valves are opened. Fig. 5 shows a modification in which the parachute is formed as a small balloon, the upper and lower fabric enclosing a container 2<1> of compressed hydrogen which issues through a perforated partition 4<1> when a valve 6<1> is opened.
