Abstract

735,031. Pneumatic springs. MINISTER OF SUPPLY. Jan. 27, 1950 [Jan. 31, 1949], No. 2678/49. Class 108 (3). In a shock-absorbing device for a freight container dropped from an aircraft a fabric bag is attached to the underside of the container and is inflated by the dynamic pressure due to the passage of the equipment through the air. As shown, Figs. 1, 2, 3, the inflatable bags 11, 12, 13 are secured to the container 10 and while inside the aircraft the flaps 27, 28 are held shut by locks 31, 32 and the bags deflated, Fig. 1. After the container leaves the craft the flaps are unlocked by a timed release, not shown, and opened by the elastic cords 33, Figs. 2, 3. The bags are inflated by the passage of air through non-return valves, not shown, in the lower surface of the bags. When the ground is reached, the non-return valve closes and the air in the bags is compressed and when a predetermined pressure is obtained, thin membranes covering the side holes 19 are burst and the air escapes gradually through 19. In a modification, the membranes may be provided with small holes.
