Abstract
338,219. White, A. E., (Boeing Airplane Co.). July 20, 1929. Floats, arrangement of; emergency fittings.- A land aeroplane is provided with inflatable bags normally enclosed by hinged rigid covers within the outlines of the fuselage or planes or within streamlined covers on the landing gear. the enclosing covers being released and the bags inflated by a common releasing means. A bag 19 having hemispherical ends and a cylindrical central portion is shown secured by two flaps 16, 17 laced to a member on the fuselage and is normally covered in a collapsed state by a hinged member 13. This member 13 has eyelets at its free edge passed through holes in the fuselage and secured by pins on a common cord connected to the release gear which first withdraws the pins and then opens the valve of a compressed air container connected to an inflating tube 29. The release gear comprises a channelled member 37, Fig. 15, with an open slot 38, sliding in a member 35 having inclined slots 36, a pin 42, to which is secured a cord 40 connected to the release pins, normally engaging both slots. When the member 37 is pulled towards the position shown, the cord 40 is pulled until the pin 41 drops out of the slot 38 and is held against the end of the slot 36 by the lower edge of the member 37 further movement of which pulls a cord 33 to open the inflating valve.
