Parachutes. - A frameless parachute has a dished plate b of sheet aluminium at its apex connected by cords g to the edge or other parts of the cover so as to open the mouth of the parachute when the cords become taut. Normally the cover is folded within the plate b, which may be carried on the aviator's back by means of four elastic bands secured to his clothing at one end and to pins on a disk d at the other. The plate b may be formed with grooves to prevent the bands from slipping. and with a central recess to take the disk d. When the aviator jumps from an aircraft, the disk d is withdrawn to release the. elastic bands by means of a cord connected to the aircraft, or by a small rigid parachute c which remains permanently attached to the plate b. The lower folds of the parachute when on the aviator's back are contained in a shallow bag sewn to his clothing so that the edges of the plate b catch the air at once.
