Abstract

137,156. Chadwick, J. S., and Downie, T. Feb. 19, 1919. Valves. -To ensure complete atomizing and mixing of the charge, the admission valve 1 to the working cylinder is formed with a tapered or cylindrical lip 4, Figs. 1 and 3 respectively, having one or two series of small orifices 6 through which a part or the whole of the charge passes on its way to the cylinder. The holes are preferably from 1/16 to 1/8 inch in diameter, and the lip 3/8 to 3/4 inch in depth. In the construction shown in Fig. 3, the cylindrical lip is practically a sliding fit in the valve casing, and a recess 7 is formed beneath the head of the valve, which forms the closure member; the lip may, however, be tapered. The holes 6 may be radial, or inclined so as to cause converging, diverging, or intermixing streams. The total area of the holes 6, Fig. 3, is equal to that of the choke-tube or induction passage.
