Two-stroke-cycle engines; cylinders, passages of.-In single and double acting engines having piston-controlled distributing-ports, backfiring is prevented by admitting a previouslycompressed charge to the cylinders through one or more ports proportioned so that the charge enters with a velocity greater than that of flame propagation in the opposite direction. The p o r t s may be formed in the cylinder wall, or, as shown at g, in a chamber b on the head of the piston. Several modified forms of this chamber and of the head of combustion chamber are described.
