Abstract

136,381. Simmonds, G. C. Feb. 18, 1919. Limbs, artificial. - An elbow-joint is locked by an internally - acting bandbrake, which is released by the pull on the operating- cord prior to the rotation of the forearm. The upper arm carries a block A to one end of which a rubberfaced spring band D is anchored. The other end of the block carries rollers B round which the free ends of the band pass to a guided rod F. The forearm carries a metal ring I surrounding, and contacting with, the spring band. The initial pull on the operating-cord reduces the loop between the guid'es J, and so raises the rod F to release the brake. The brake is reapplied when the pull is seleased quickly, and then retains the forearm in the adjusted position; but the forearm can be lowered by releasing the pull gradually, so that the forearm has time to fall to any desired extent before the brake is reapplied.
