Limbs, artificial. - A combined gripping - appliance and hook, serving as a substitute for a hand comprises a fixed hook C, suitably attached to the arm, and a movable hook H pivoted at K to an extension of the fixed hook. By operating the lever F, the hook H can be swung away from the fixed hook against the action of the spring P. A candle L, also pivoted at K, transmits the pressure of the spring to the movable hook. In addition, the movable hook can rotate axially in the socket E so that it can coincide. with the main hook to form in effect a single hook, or can be rotated through 180 degrees to form a loop, or can be arranged at any angle to the plane of the fixed hook when desirable. In all positions, the spring causes the hooks to exert a gripping-action on any article inserted between their contacting surfaces. Normally, the pressure of the cradle L against the coned bearing J at the end of the movable hook is sufficient to retain the hook in the desired angular position, but inter - engaging parts may be fitted between the hook and the cradle if necessary.
