Limbs, artificial.- -In joints for elbows and knees of artificial limbs, the bucket 2 of the upper limb member is formed in a sturdy solid manner, for example as a metal casting, and has a slideway 4, 4 in which slides a frame 6 carrying the rotatable shaft 5 to which the arm 12 of the lower limb member is attached. In the construction described, the bucket 2 is formed of a casting of aluminium or a suitable light alloy, and has a cylindrical body to the upper imperforate part 8 of which are attached the upper limb member 1 and an exterior light sheet metal or like bucket 10 fitting over the whole assembly. The lower portion of the bucket 2 is cut away to leave a semicylindrical portion which terminates in a semi-cupshaped end 3. The slideway is formed by two parallel semicircular ribs 4, the recess between which is machined &c. into a rectangular or other cross-section to take the semicircular metal frame 6 which is secured in position by screws &c. 7. The shaft 5 is mounted in bearings 13 on the frame 6, and a boss 14 on the arm 12 is secured thereto by clamping, screwing, &c. Locking means for the joint comprise a sector 15 on the boss 14 formed with a series of holes 18 in which engages a plunger 17 moving in a socket 16 on the frame 6. The plunger is reciprocated to engage and disengage with the holes by engagement of a pin 21 thereon in a cam slot 20 formed in a sleeve 19 rotatably mounted on shaft 5. A spring 22 keeps the cam in the normally locking position. The cam is operated through a chain 23 secured between the sleeve 19 and a lever 24 to which is attached an operating strap 25. A catch 26 on the outer bucket 10 holds the lever 24 in the position in which the plunger 17 is retracted and the segment 15 is free. The lower limb member is flexed by means of a strap 27 secured to the arm 12 and passing out through a slot 28. The outer bucket 10 has a slot 11 through which the arm 12 projects and swings.
