Abstract

1351952 Foil caps for bottles O A HANSEN 13 Aug 1971 [14 Aug 1970] 38128/71 Heading B8T A decorative cap, for use on a bottle already fitted with a closure cap, is made of aluminium foil or aluminium foil with backing, e.g. of paper, and has a circular crown with dependent skirt, a weakening line 7 extending around the skirt being interrupted by at least three webs 16 of between 0À4 and 1À5 mm. in length. Such a cap is made from a circular blank in which an annular region around a central circular portion, which forms the cap crown, is folded to form the conical depending skirt. The weakening line is formed on the cap, held on a mandrel by a rotary knife which has a cutting edge with transverse slots corresponding to the webbed portions. The cap is applied to a bottle, already closed by a cap closure, by placing the cap over the bottle neck, radially pressing the cap firstly along the larger diameter portions 4 of the bottle and the lower edge of the cap closure, and then pressing the cap against the bottle at the reduced portions of the bottle so as to either stress the webs and force the two edges of the weakening line apart, or to break the webs completely Fig. 3 (not shown).
