Abstract
1351582 lon sources PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd 29 Dec 1972 [3 Jan 1972] 60032/72 Heading H1D An ion source, e.g. for a neutron generator, comprises a first apertured cathode 11, a second cathode 12 having an ion exit aperture, an anode 10 between the cathodes, means, such as permanent magnets 13, 15 for producing a magnetic field along direction 14 and a collector electrode 22 on the side of the first cathode remote from the anode for collecting ions of the undesired polarity which are accelerated in the opposite direction to arrow 14 and pass through the central bore of permanent magnets 13. The collector preferably has a funnel-shape recess 23. The ion source contains deuterium and tritium in equal quantities at 5 x 10<SP>-3</SP> mmHg which is maintained by a source 2 comprising finely divided titanium which absorbs the gases and releases them on heating. An ionization manometer 9 is provided. The target comprises a 5 Ám layer 8 of titanium on a base 7 of copper.
