Abstract

1349634 Mounting spindle bearings WHITIN MACHINE WORKS Inc 26 Feb 1973 [1 March 1972] 9286/73 Heading DID [Also in Division F2] A spindle is mounted in bolster case 11 by a radial bearing adjacent the upper end of the case (not shown) and a footstep bearing 27 adjacent the lower end. The footstep bearing 27 is located by a spring 96 having one end rigidly engaging the footstep bearing and the other end rigidly engaging the end wall of the case. The spring 96 is such that the footstep bearing is laterally centred, resiliently supported and prevented from rotating. The spring may be helical (as shown) straight or bent. In the latter two cases a spacer is provided to prevent excessive compression of the spring. The footstep bearing may be surrounded by a helical clamping coil 36 immersed in oil. The footstep bearing may have a passage therein so that the oil may penetrate to the bearing surface.
