1344675 Grippers for lifting paper rolls HAGGLUND & SONER AB 8 Sept 1971 [10 Sept 1970] 41788/71 Heading B8H A lifting device for use with a ship's crane and adapted to grip a pair of paper rolls 4 consists of a pair of jaws 7 each of which is slidable within a housing 8 which is pivotally mounted on a telescopic body 5, 6 and which is provided with an arm 9 connected to a spreader by ropes 22. Further ropes 33 are connected between the spreader and a cam device, Fig. 4 (not shown), within the housing 8, which device alternately causes the jaw 7 to be locked in its operative position, as shown, or to be withdrawn into the housing 8 on consecutively raising the cam device by means of the rope 33. In operation, on lowering the device until stops 21 support the device on a load 4, on subsequently raising the spreader bar, the jaws 7 will be locked in their operative position and the device will be suspended from the ropes 22 causing the jaws 7 to pivot towards each other to grip the load. On lowering the load on to a support surface and subsequently raising the spreader bar, the cam device is raised by the ropes 33 and thereby retracts the jaw into the housing until a stop is engaged, the lifting device thereafter being suspended by the ropes 33 until the device is lowered on to a further load and the cycle is repeated. In a second embodiment, Figs. 5, 6 (not shown), the ropes 33 are omitted and the jaw locking mechanism is modified so as to be actuated by means of the arms 9.
