Abstract

1284851 Hooks M TANIGUCHI 5 March 1971 6168/71 Heading E2A A hook for releasably engaging a load carrying element 15 supporting a load to be lowered to a load bearing surface by a lifting and lowering device O, comprises a hook part I for releasably engaging said element; connecting means 12 engaging an elongate guide 11 provided by said hook part for pivotally connecting said hook part to said device for support thereby, and allowing swinging movement of said hook part between limit positions when an abutment 4 provided by said hook part engages a surface during lowering; and means 6 for restricting relative pivotal movement between said hook part and said connecting means one with respect to the other; the arrangement being such that in use, when the load is lowered to the load bearing surface by the device, further lowering of said hook by the device reduces tension between the element and said hook part when the abutment contacts the surface whereby said hook part swings towards one of said limit positions so as to permit disengagement of the element and said hook part one with respect to the other, and lifting of the device permits said hook part to pivot to said one limit position to clear the element. As shown the guide 11 is a long curved slot and the connecting means consists of a shackle to which the device O can be attached and a pin 13 which passes through apertures in the limbs of the shackle and through the slot 11, the shackle carrying two mousing pieces which when the hook part is in one position closes the mouth of the hook part, a shackle 7 being attached to the hook part adjacent one end and a float 21 being attached by means of a link to an aperture 5 near the opposite end of the hook part the float being attached near the abutment 4 of the hook part; for raising a load the hook part is disposed in the position shown in Fig. 1 in which the load carrying element is a sling 15; when the load is lowered and becomes supported the abutment 14 causes the hook part to pivot anticlockwise so that the sling becomes detached from the hook part and subsequently raising the hook causes the pin 13 to move to the other end of the slot 11 so reversing the position of the hook part; the shackle 7 is attached to a tie line 20 to assist in pivoting the hook part to the releasing position. The float 21 acts to pivot the hook part to the releasing position if the load is lowered into water and so detaches the hook part from the load. The means 6 is the pin by which the shackle 7 is attached to the hook part and it abuts the shackle of the connecting means to restrict the pivoted movement of the hook part in the clockwise direction.
