1389354 Article lifting apparatus H F DALGLISH 15 Dec 1972 [6 Jan 1972] 58443/72 Heading B8H A device for engaging and lifting a roll of material B, when its core 41 is either vertically or horizontally positioned, comprises an arm 17 pivotally mounted at 19 on a bracket 12 which is vertically movable on the mast 11 of a lift truck A, a probe 29, which in use engages with the inside of the core 41 by means of jaws 31, being pivotally mounted at 30 on the arm 17, an hydraulic ram 22 being pivotally connected at 23 and 26 to the arm 17 and bracket 12 respectively, a chain 37 extending from the bracket 12 about a sprocket 27 rotatably mounted on the piston-rod 24 of the ram 22 to a link 35 mounted on the probe 29 such that in the position shown in Fig. 2 when the arm 17 is vertically oriented the probe 29 extends horizontally by virtue of its connection to the chain 37 and when the piston-rod 24 is retracted the arm 17 rotates about pivot 19 to the position shown in Fig. 1 and in Fig. 3 (not shown) in which it is horizontally disposed and in which the probe 29 extends vertically downwards, the probe being held in that position by the engagement therewith of the link 35. A clamping means 42 is attached to the probe 29 and consists of a clamp (52) which is movable inwardly and outwardly by means of a ram (47), Fig. 4 (not shown), said clamp (52) engaging with the outside of roll B in conjunction with the probe 29 engaging with the core 41 of the roll B.
