Abstract

133,119. Thompson, W. B. Sept. 3, 1918. Riveting.-Hydraulic riveting-machines, more particularly of the kind for riveting marine boilers, as described in Specification 24208/10, are constructed with a. small secondary cylinder, and economy of high-pressure water is effected by advancing the riveting-tup for the greater portion of its stroke by admitting high-pressure water to the secondary cylinder, with or without admitting low-pressure water to the main cylinder, and the maximum pressure is produced at the end of the stroke by then admitting high-pressure water to the main cylinder. The tup is carried by a ram d working in a cylinder a, and the rear end of the ram d is formed with a cylinder e in which fits a fixed ram b formed with a cup-leather packing- joint j and with a bore h through which highpressure water is admitted to advance the ram d. Towards the end of the stroke, high-pressure water is admitted to the cylinder a through a passage g, and at the end of the stroke the ram d is returned by admitting high-pressure water to a chamber l formed between a reduced part k of the ram d and the cylinder a. A packing-gland m and ring o are provided for the ram d.
