13,141. Kessler, H. July 20. Pumping-engines; compound engines; starting. - Consists of means for obtaining the proper initial pressure in the low - pressure cylinder of a duplex direct-acting pump. A differential piston valve H, H<1>, having the ratio between its pistons the same as that between the main pistons, is exposed on its smaller end to steam from the high-pressure valve-cheat by the pipe I, I<2>, and on its larger end to steam from the low-pressure chest by the hole G. When the latter pressure becomes too low, the valve is forced down, admitting high-pressure steam to the low-pressure chest by the ports J, K. When the valve is depressed, as just described, its larger end seats on a valve seat round the hole G. The annular space between the two pistons H, H<1> is connected by a pipe 0 to the condenser.
