13,704. Wheeler, F. M. July 31. Air pumps.-The pumps f are vertical, and are operated by a simple or compound direct-acting steam engine a. The discharge valves h and i lift upwards, and are easily reached by removing the covers m, k. They are kept covered with water. The piston g serves as the inlet valve, and is so wide that it just uncovers an annular port 4 at the end of each stroke. The steam and exhaust pipes of a compound engine are fitted with stop and three-way cocks, so t h a t either the high or low pressure cylinder may be used alone or both may be used in the usual manner. The pumps are specially suitable for torpedo-boat and similar engines.
