Piston pumps; valves, arrrangement of.-In an air-pump of the kind in which the cylinder cover 8 forms the delivery valve and is lifted by the piston at the end of its stroke, while at the upper end of the cylinder is a chamber containing oil which a depending tube 16 prevents from splashing up and escaping with the air, the inlet pipe 6 is led into an annular chamber 5 surrounding a portion of the cylinder and opening into it by ports 7 and a port 71 extending to the bottom of the cylinder. The piston is provided with a cup-leather 3 and a valve 4 opening on the down-stroke. A cylindrical baffle 17 is formed on the upper surface of the cylinder cover, holes 18 therein allowing oil to drain through them. Excess of oil may be removed through an opening 13. According to the Provisional Specification, two or more pumps may be used in series, the chamber at the end of the cylinder being provided with a tube at least as long as the cylinder, which contains a stuffing-box and leads to the suction of the next pump.
