Abstract

20,355. Morison, D. B. Sept. 13. Air-pumps, steam-engine and like.-A steam-engine air-pump is constructed in such a manner that fluid is drawn into the cylinder during both strokes of the piston, while discharge only takes place on the up-stroke. Fig. 1 shows one form of the pump. During the up-stroke of the piston b, the fluid above it is discharged through a valve g, while water and vapour are being drawn in through a valve h. During the down-stroke, the fluid below the piston is compressed until the upper surface of the piston has passed the ports f, when the compressed fluid escapes through annular ports e into the upper end of the cylinder which already contains air and vapour drawn in through the valve n and ports k. In other modifications, the valve h opens into the annular passage e, the piston-rod d is arranged below the piston instead of above, the ports k are placed so that the piston passes them at the top of the up-stroke, and a relief valve is placed in the port e.
