WVILDIAM H. CLOUD, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR, BY Mnsnnassren- MENTS, OF ONEHALF TO WM. H. JACKSON, OF SAME PLACE.
VLIFTING AND FORCE PUMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 257,473, dated May 9,1882.
Application filed April 21, 1881. Renewed April 8, 1852. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. GLoUD, of Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented an Improvement in Lifting and Force Pumps, of which the following is a specification.
The nature of my invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in that class ofpumps known as force-pumps, and the invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as more fully hereinafter described.
Figure 1 is a vertical central longitudinal section. Fig.2 is a plan with the top and up- 1 per valve-chamber removed. Fig. 3 is a vertical central cross-section on the line-main Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a top plan.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, A represents a zo pump-barrel of nearly rectangular form, open on the top side, and provided with valves a and b, seated in the bottom of said barrel. By the-means of these valves and openings upon which they are seated a communication is had 2 between said barrel and a water-way, B, in the base of the pump, and into which water is admitted through the suction-pipe O. The pumpbarrel at one end is cast with an annular flange, c, to which is bolted a head, (I, with which is en- 0 gaged a plug and stuiiing-box, 6, through which the piston-rod D has its reciprocating motion, as in the ordinary construction of steam-err gines. The opposite end of this barrel is cast solid, as shown, in whichparticular it differs 3 5 from other pumps of a smilar character, which are provided with .a removable head, by means of which access is obtained to the interior of the barrel at that end. This barrel is also provided with a diaphragm, E, through the center of which is a round hole, into which is fitted a stuffing-box, F, through which the hollow piston G, which is secured to the piston-rod D, has a reciprocating motion. This diaphragm divides the barrel into two chambers, H and 5 H, between which there is no communication when the piston and its stuffing-box is in place. It will he noticed that the piston is a shell, and it is designed, in order not to wear the stuffingbox unequally, that its weight shall be about equal to the weight of water which it would displace, and that the ends ofthis piston are beveled to enable it to be forced with less power than though the ends were flat. Channels It may be out around the inner face of the stuffing-box F to provide fora water packing of the piston, thereby enabling the pump to be used with hot water, which could not be done were rubber or other elastic rings employed for the purpose.
Iis a water-chamber and valve-chambercom- 6o bined, with openings '5 t" in its bottom opening into the pump-barrel, of which said water and valve chamber forms a cap. It k are the valves which alternately close and disclose the openings t i. There are other openings, in m, in the bottom of this chamber communicating with the exit-openings n a, one of each being on either side of the trunk, and to either of which maybe attached a suitable pipe or hose.
If a constant flow of water is desired, one of these exit-openin gs should be closed by a plug, as shown.
J is a cap or cover to the valve-chamber, surmounted by the air-chamber L, of the usual construction. The joints between the pumpbarrel A and the valve-chamber I and between the latter and the cap J should be perfectly tight, pret'erably being so made by grindmg.
The inlet-pipe G being put into conimunieation with a proper watersupply, when the piston is reciprooated the water is drawn alternatel y through the valves a I) and forced alternately through the valves 70 70 into the chan1- her I, and thence through the outlet n.
The piston-rod D is designed to be connected with the piston-rod of a reciprocating engine v of sutticient length of stroke to actuate the piston of the pump.
v(last upon the sides of the pump-barrel are cars 0, to which are pivoted one end of the bolts s, the opposite ends of which are threaded and provided with a nut, t, and the edges of the cap J areprovided with similar slotted ears,
0, and the bolts 3 are of the proper length, so 5 that when the cap is in place the free ends of the bolts are engaged with the ears of the cap,
as shown in Fig. 4, when the nuts t are tightened to hold the parts rigidly together. To remove the cap it will be noticed it is not nec- Ioo essary to remove a bolt, but simply loosen the nuts and slide the upper ends of the bolts out of engagement with the ears in the caps.
It will further be noticed that by removing the cap J and the valve-chamber I access can be had to all parts and both chambers of the pump-barrel without the necessity ot'removing the heads of the barrel as such are ordinarily constructed.
What I claim as my invention is- 1. In apump, the barrel A, divided into two chambers, H H, by a diaphragm, E, through which the piston reciproeates, in combination with aremovable top closing, the upper openings ot'the chambers H H, whereby access can be had to the inlet-valves in each of said chambers without removing either head of the barrel, substantially as described.
2. In a pump, the barrel A, provided with a diaphragm, E, forming two chambers, 11 H, in combination with a removable top closing the upper'openings of said chambers, a stutting-box secured in the diaphragm E, and the piston G, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
I, closing the upper openings of the chambers H H, the separable cap J, closing the valvec hamber I, and boltss s, pivoted between lugs 0 0 of the barrel A, and engaging with lugs 0 0 ot' the cap for detachably securing the barrel A, chamber I, and cap J together, substantially as and for the purpose described.
