Steam - engine airpumps in series.-In a steam-engine air-pump, in which the air and water are withdrawn separately, the air is compressed up to atmospheric pressure in two stages. Air is drawn into a cylinder a through ports c, and on the down-stroke of the piston b, is forced, through valves f, into the pressure chamber h of the water pump, which is of the valveless suction type, water entering through the valved piston d at the air and same time. On the up-stroke, this air and water is forced out through valves i, and the air that is drawn into the top half of the cylinder a is forced directly into the atmosphere. In a modification, the air in the top half of the cylinder a passes by means of a pipe to the pressure chamber h of the water pump.
