Exhausting.-In pumps for exhausting dustladen air, of the type in which, the air is maintained out of contact with the pump by means of water or other fluid, fresh fluid to compensate for losses is introduced so that it sets up a current through the liquid from the pump to the air outlet, this being effected preferably by the pump itself instead of by an auxiliary pump as hitherto. The invention is stated to be applicable to reciprocating or oscillating piston pumps, centrifugal pumps, rotary pumps, and injectors. In the form shown in Fig. 1, water or oil, which nearly fills the container d, is displaced by a plunger b, working in an inner chamber with an enlarged open end r, to exhaust dust-laden air from a conduit h through valves e, i into a depositing-chamber k, or into the atmosphere. A regulated amount of pure liquid for replacing the impure liquid which leaves the pump along with the dust-laden air is drawn in by way of a check valve n, and, on the down-stroke of the plunger, is forced towards the outlet. A single plunger may be used in combination with several containers, and may be arranged horizontally between a pair of alternately-acting containers. In the form shown in Fig. 2, a centrifugal or rotary pump s displaces liquid from one container t into another u to effect thereby a continuous exhaustion from a common suction conduit h. The reversal of the displacement of the liquid is effected by means of a piston valve z working in the chamber y. A regulated amount of pure liquid is drawn through the pipe o as in Fig. 1.
