Abstract

1695. Oddie, P. F. Jan. 23. Steam-engine air-pumps.-Relates to steamengine air-pumps of the valved-piston type, and consists in increasing the capacity of such pumps by causing the bucket valve to remain closed during a portion of the down stroke, during which time vapour is drawn into the upper end of the barrel through a port leading from the upper side of the main inlet pipe. In the pump shown, the bucket valve b is held on its seat by means of a spring d during the early part of the stroke, air or vapour being drawn in through the port g and valve f. When the pressure below the bucket a becomes sufficiently great, the valve b opens and the usual pumping action is effected.
