Abstract

21,959. Hutchings, J. Oct. 4. Stearn pumps.-A portable d i r e c t double-acting pump, for use in mines, ships, &c. is provided with an oscillating plug valve which controls the motive fluid to the power cylinder e, and the suction and discharge of the pump cylinder h. The valve is provided with V-shaped divisional walls connecting the solid parts. With the valve in the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2, compressed air passes from the inlet a to the top of the piston d, the exhaust from beneath the piston passing to the atmosphere through a passage 3 in the valve. The fluid to be pumped passes from the inlet i to the top of the piston g, and the fluid beneath the piston g is forced through passage 5 to the discharge 7. On completion of the stroke, the valve is oscillated by levers actuated by the tappet rodj, which is connected to the piston-rodf. The cylinder ends are provided with plates 2, packing 23, and covers 11.
