Abstract

Air pumps of the type described in Specification No. 13,678, A.D. 1902, are arranged so that the air or vapour and the water are separately, drawnoff on opposite strokes of the pistons or plungers. Fig. 1 shows a vertical pump. The steam or other vapour from the condenser d, together with the condensing - water, is drawn through the suction valves a<1> and forced up the delivery pipe e by the upper surface of the piston c, while any air or uncondensed vapour passes through the pipe g to the underside of the piston and is expelled through the outlet valve f<11>. In modifications, the air valves are arranged in the end of the barrel instead of in a separate chamber, as shown in Fig. 1, and a trunk piston may be employed, as shown in Fig. 2, in order to withdraw a relatively-greater volume of air than of water. The inlet valve h and outlet valve h<1> are constructed as shown. The cooling-water may be caused to pass through a jacket formed round the barrel before entering the condenser, and the valves, if desired, may be mechanically operated.
