Abstract

Piston pumps ; pumps enclosed in c a s i n g ; interconvertible liquid and air pumps.-Comprises a doubleacting piston pump for liquids or gases, applicable also as a condenser and air pump for steam engines. The barrel a has a number of openings p at the centre communicating with the auction pipe d, and is provided at both ends with delivery valves v opening into chambers f, g connected to the delivery pipe j. As the piston b rises or falls, a vacuum is caused underneath it until the piston passes the ports p, when water or air rushes in and is subsequently delivered through the valves v upon the return stroke. When used in connection with a steam engine, the chamber c may be employed as a condenser. The valves are arranged as shown in Fig. 3, and are rendered accessible by openings o in the casing.
