Water and other liquid pressure engines.-Relates to a system of valves for governing the flow of water to a pump motor &c. for compressing gas, specially applicable in connexion with high pressure gas lighting. Fig. 1 shows a motor e worked by water, from a domestic or other pressure supply, which flows alternately in opposite directions in the pipes d, d<1>. The pressure water flows past a valve g, which is controlled by the pressure of the gas in a container i, Fig. 2, acting through a manometer, to a pipe b opening directly into the valve cylinder a and provided with by-passes a<1>, a<2> communicating with the ends of this cylinder. Within the cylinder a works the distributing- valve which governs the flow in the pipes d, d<1>. This valve consists of distributing-pistons ax, ax x, and operating pistons a<xxx>, a<xxxx> as shown, and is actuated by water admitted alternately to the operating pistons through the by-passes a<1>, a', which are provided with cocks or slide valves a<5>, a<6> actuated by rods a<7>, a<8>, or by other connexions from the pump - motor rod. The operating pistons a<xxx>, a<xxxx> may be arranged in separate chambers at the ends of the valve cylinder a. The exhaust ports for the motor are shown at a<00>, and those for the ends of the valve cylinder a<11>, a<12>. Fig. 5 shows a hollow distributing-valve with one inlet port k<1> and two distributing-ports k<2>. The gas enters the chamber i<1>, Fig. 2, of the container i at i<1x>, and passes by the pipe i<3> to the compressors f, f, Fig. 1, whence it is compressed and returns by the pipe i<4> to the chamber i' provided with a manometer safety-valve h. The liquid in the manometer acts on a float g<2> connected by a rod g<1> to a lever controlling the plug valve g, Figs. 1 and 2, on the supply pipe b to the motor.
