Abstract

6867. Southey, A. W. March 22. Hydraulically - actuated pumps; gas - actuated pumps ;differential pumps.-A pump for beverages, sewage, or other liquids, or for compressing gases, and operated by water or other fluids under pressure, consists of an engine cylinder a and pump cylinder b, in which work pistons d, e, provided with cup-leathers. These pistons are connected by a hollow piston-rod c, the cross-sectional area of which is one-half that of the cylinders. Through the piston d passes a rod g, the outer end of which is connected to the inlet valve h and outlet valve i, the other end of this rod being provided with a plate o which may be acted on by springs p attached to the pistons. The annular space at the back of the piston d is connected by a pipe m to the source of pressure. The pump is provided with a footvalve q and a head-valve s, the space at the back of its piston being connected by a pipe t to the rising main which may be fitted with an air vessel.
