Valves and cocks, arrangement of.-In a compressor having a sleeve valve reciprocating between a fixed cylinder and a moving piston, the valve is provided with a single set of ports adapted to communicate with the cylinder and alternately with separate inlet and discharge ports. The compressor shown is provided with water-cooled spaces 2, 3. The sleeve valve 8 is operated by cams 16 on the piston crank - shaft, the cams co-operating with bowls 18, and one of them also with a bowl 20 on the bottom of a carrier ring 19. The cams are arranged so that the ports 15 in the sleeve are opposite the inlet port 10 during the down-stroke of the piston, and opposite a higher outlet port during the up-stroke. The ports are provided with flanges or facings 11, to which pipes or conduits may be attached. They may be of grid form. When the sleeve is operated by eccentrics or cranks, in place of cams, one or more non-return valves are provided on the discharge port, which prevent delivery of air under subnormal pressure.
