Pumping-engines; valve gear.-The supply of steam to operate the main piston-ended valve V is controlled by valves formed by rods B, B' secured to the main piston. In the position shown, the main valve has been moved from left to right by the admission of steam at the port X<1> and its exhaust at the port X. The auxiliary exhaust ports are between the steam ports to cushion the main valve. Slight modifications are shown, suitable for compound engines and for double-ram pumps. In one of these, a single auxiliary valve rod is used, and moved only at the end of the stroke by alternate contact with the two pistons.
