Compound and multiple-expansion engines.-Relates to the construction and arrangement of the steam valves, cylinders, and ports for compound, triple, and multiple-expansive working. In the form shown in Fig. 1, a central tubular slide valve A admits high-pressure steam to the annular space B in a differential cylinder in which works the trunk piston U, D, and exhausts the same into the receiver. Thence, by valves K and L, on the same rod as the valve A, a portion of this steam is expanded in the upper end of the differential cylinder, and a portion in the lower end. This engine may be modified by omitting the valve K, all the work then being done on the down-stroke. Two or more pairs of such cylinders may have their receiver spaces connected together. Fig. 2 shows a form of triple-expansion engine, in which the steam exhausted from the space b in one pair of cylinders is passed through the pipe o to do work in the upper end of the adjacent pair, and is thence passed through the tubular valve a to the lower end of the same pair. Fig. 3 shows another form of triple-expansion engine especially suitable for plunger pumps. In this, high-pressure steam is admitted under control of the valve p to the upper end of the differential cylinder, then expanded in the annular space b<2>, and finally expanded at the lower end.
