Abstract

7315. Wilson, W. C. March 26. Compound and multiple-expansion engines with co- axial cylinders. The pistons a<2>, c<2> are rigidly connected together, and the slide valves d, e may be worked by one or two eccentrics. High- pressure steam enters the valve-chest f through the passage m, and is conveyed by the port a<3> to the cylinder a, to produce the first inward stroke. On the return stroke the valve d places the ports a<3>, h in communication, and the valve e simultaneously opens the port c<3> to the valve-chest g and admits the high-pressure exhaust to the cylinder c. On the next inward stroke the port a<3> is again opened to the steam chest f, and the port c<3> is opened to the passage i, which conveys the low-pressure exhaust to the space between the pistons, to balance partly the back pressure. The passage n exhausts to the atmosphere or to a separate receiver. The steam in the space between the pistons acts as a lubricant. The cylinders may be duplicated, the exhaust steam from the passage n then passing to the high-pressure valve-chest of the second pair of cylinders.
