Hydraulic presses.-The first part of the stroke of the ram a is accomplished by means of a smaller auxiliary ram h which forces water at a reduced pressure from the large cylinder into the ram cylinder b. To finish the stroke of the ram a the full pressure is admitted. On the return of the ram the water returns to the cylinder j, the excess being allowed to escape by a valve q. The action is controlled by valves p, o, c, f, constructed as described in Specification No. 14,563, A.D. 1891.
