Abstract

427,571. Presses for separating liquids from solids ; hydraulic machines. ROSE, DOWNS, & THOMPSON, Ltd., and DOWNS, L. H., Old Foundry, Hull. Dec. 30, 1933, No. 36719. [Class 46] The position of a tapering member, which is placed in the outlet of a worm extrusion press to regulate discharge of solid material therethrough, is adjusted hydraulically. As shown in Fig. 2, the conical member 6 is connected to a cross-head 8 the ends of which are connected to the plungers 9 of hydraulic cylinders 11 to which liquid under pressure is supplied by a hand or powerdriven pump. In the modification shown in Fig. 4 there is only one hydraulic cylinder 11 the plunger 9 of which is connected to a lever 19 fulcrummed in fixed brackets 20 and having a bifurcated end detachably connected to the member 6 by screwed bolts 23. Fig. 3 shows an arrangement ot valves for controlling the liquid supply and discharge to the cylinder or cylinders 11. Operation of a hand-wheel 15 allows a check valve 113 to open so that liquid passes from a pump through a pipe 17 to one end of the cylinder and causes the piston to move the part 6 towards the press chamber. The liquid can exhaust from this end of the cylinder when a hand wheel 16 is turned to allow a check valve. 117 to open, the liquid passing away through a vent 122. The working pressure on the part 6 will then cause the piston to move in the reverse direction. If however the extrusion press is not working, the wheel 16 can be turned further so that a valve 120 closes the vent. If the valve 113 is then allowed to open liquid under pressure will pass to both ends of the cylinder through pipes 17, 18 respectively and the piston, which has sides of unequal effective area, will move in the reverse direction and withdraw the part 6 from the press chamber.
