Abstract

875,441. Extruding coal-dust &c. COAL INDUSTRY (PATENTS) Ltd. Oct. 10, 1957 [Oct. 18, 1956], No. 31786/56. Class 87(2). Rods of compacted coal-dust are extruded through a nozzle having at least one movable part by a ram and the fluid pressure on said ram controls means to move said part so as to maintain the resistance to extrusion substantially constant. A hydraulic ram (not shown) forces coal-dust M at pressure P through a nozzle having a fixed part 10 and movable sections 11 hinged thereto. Oil at constant high pressure in pipe 15 is supplied to piston/cylinder units 12, 13 and provides a constant pressure on parts 11. Pipe 18 connects valve 19 to the fluid pressure acting on the extrusion ram and if the resistance to extrusion is too high valve 19 is opened so that oil blows from cylinders 13 through pipes 16, 17 and parts 11 open slightly. In the embodiment of Fig. 2 (not shown), the ram pressure acts in opposition to a loading on a single movable mould part and in Fig. 3 (not shown), the nozzle has a zone of increased cross section to provide shear stress and strain on the rod and at a point in its stroke the extrusion ram brings the resistance control into operation.
