A cable sheathing extrusion press has a single receiver 1 adapted to be cut-off from the feed duct 12, 13 leading to the extrusion die, and a storage device consisting of an auxiliary ram 1a and cylinder 9 is disposed in said duct and is charged with the extrusion material from the receiver during the working stroke of the main ram 3, and upon withdrawal of the latter for re-charging the receiver, extrusion is continued from the storage device. In one embodiment the receiver 1 is stationary and has an outlet ball valve 6 which closes during retraction of the main ram 3. The latter is actuated by a piston 4 in a main cylinder 5. The auxiliary ram 1a is integral with the receiver and operates in a cylinder 9 formed in a member 11 attached to or integral with the press-head 10 through which the cable 14 passes. The press-head is supported on an hydraulic piston 15 working in a cylinder 16 supplied with pressure water through pipe 22 and having an outlet 21 controlled by a throttle valve 20. During extrusion of an ingot in the receiver, the piston 10 is forced into the cylinder 16 whereby the storage cylinder 9 is filled and upon subsequent withdrawal of ram 3 pressure water is admitted to cylinder 16 which raises the presshead and member 11; valve 6 is thereby closed and extrusion continues from cylinder 9. In another embodiment, Figs. 3, 4 (not shown), the press-head is stationary and the receiver 1 carrying the auxiliary ram 1a is movable by hydraulic pressure. Instead of the valve 6 a conical feed duct tapering towards the extrusion die may be used to prevent back flow of material during operation of the auxiliary ram.
