An hydraulic extrusion press has its extrusion plunger 4a advanced to a preselected stroke position and then moved rapidly to perform an impact extrusion stroke by pressure from an hydraulic accumulator 10 acting on the main press piston 4, and a retraction cylinder 7, for retracting the piston and plunger, is connected permanently to the accumulator through a pipe 9 and one-way valve 6 which during the initial part of the extrusion stroke causes pressure in cylinder 7 to build up until it opens the valve 6 and thus causes rapid movement of the plunger 4a. The latter is first advanced to a distance s from the billet 1 by pressure from an air reservoir 16 admitted to piston space 8 through pipes 17, 14 and valve 18; cylinder space 7 is meanwhile connected to exhaust through valve 12. The latter is then closed and an inlet valve 15, actuated by a piston 22 controlled by a pilot valve 19, is opened to admit pressure liquid from accumu- lator 10 into cylinder 8. The resulting movement of pistons 4, 5 pressurizes the liquid trapped in cylinder 7 which is released ultimately through valve 6 whereby the plunger 4a impact-extrudes billet 1 through die 2a. The pistons are subsequently retracted by admitting pressure liquid from accumulator 10 into cylinder 7 through valve 13 and pipes 23, 11.
