Abstract

1,188,116. Extruding. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. 14 Sept., 1967 [15 Sept., 1966], No. 41332/66. Heading B3P. A billet 65 with a tapered rear end 67 is extruded through a die 52 by hydrostatic pressure supplemented by direct mechanical loading; the hydrostatic pressure being reduced gradually to atmospheric as the tapered end passes through the die. The direct loading may be applied to the extruded product by a drawing device 66 or pressure may be applied by a ram to the rear end of the billet. Container 51 is connected by passage 53 to a pressure liquid cylinder 49 containing a plunger 48 and sealing gland 50. Plunger 48 is connected to a double-acting piston 46 working in cylinder 43. The underside 56 of piston 46 is supplied with pressure liquid by supply means 57 through metering valve 58, and is also connected through metering valve 59 with an hydraulic accumulator 60, 62 loaded by a gas bottle 64. The upper side of piston 46 is supplied with gas pressure through duct 55. In operation, this gas pressure causes the piston 46 and plunger 48 to move downwardly and pressurize the liquid in containers 49, 51, whilst liquid in space 56 is displaced through metering valve 58. The hydrostatic pressure produced in container 51 supplemented by the pull of drawing device 66 effects the extrusion of the larger diameter portion of the billet through die 52. As the tapered end 67 passes into the die, the hydrostatic pressure in cylinder 51 is gradually reduced by closing valve 58 and opening valve 59 whereby the accumulator 60 applies upward pressure to piston 46. As the small diameter end portion 66 enters the die the hydrostatic pressure has been reduced to atmospheric whereby extrusion is then effected wholly by the drawing device 66. Alternatively the hydrostatic pressure may be reduced in steps (C<SP>1</SP>-X) (D 1 -y). Fig. 2 (not shown). In another embodiment, Fig. 1 (not shown), the container (1) is connected directly to the hydraulic chamber (13) of a gas loaded accumulator. The gradual or stepwise reduction in hydrostatic pressure is caused by reducing the gas pressure in the accumulator.
