Abstract

954,126. Extruding. ALUMINIUM LABORATORIES Ltd. March 12, 1963 [March 13, 1962], No. 9560/62. Heading B3P. An extrusion press for aluminium and like metals has its ram 2 fitting the container bore 3 sufficiently closely to provide an effective air seal and provided with a normally-open valve 5 positioned in a passage leading to an evacuation pump and which is closed upon contact with the billet. The ram has a thrust pad 1 carrying a guide 6 for the valve 5 which is biased by spring 11 to an open position determined by abutments 14. The valve stem 9 is fluted to allow evacuation of air from the billet container, after insertion of a hot billet, until the valve is closed. Passage 10 and pipe 17 are connected to a vacuum pump. The press is used for the extrusion of long tubes for use as cable sheaths from successive billets which weld together by the extrusion pressure.
