Abstract
1,144,364. Extruding. VICKERS Ltd. 20 Dec., 1967 [1 Oct., 1966 (2)], Nos. 24510/66 and 25635/66. Heading B3P. [Also in Division F1] An hydraulic intensifier cylinder 1 containing a metal billet to be extruded through a die 4 is supplied with fluid from an external low pressure source, e.g. a pump or accumulator (not shown) through an inlet 24, an annular groove 9 within a member 7 in sealing abutment with the cylinder end and an L-shaped passage 12, 13 in the end 6 of a ram 5, and air is vented from the other end of the cylinder through a cut-away portion 26 of the cylinder or of a liner 3 thereof and which bleed portion 26 is closed when cylinder charging is complete by moving the die into sealing abutment against the cylinder end. On advancing the ram 5 into the cylinder 1 the passage 12, 13 is cut-off from chamber 9. In a modification the working end 6 of the ram in which the passageway 12, 13 is formed is detachably secured to the ram body and is of more readily workable metal than is the body.
