Abstract

593,926. Extruding. HENLEYS TELEGRAPH WORKS CO., Ltd., W. T., JUDGE, E. E., and FRY, F. H. June 20, 1945, No. 15695. [Class 83 (iv)) In a press for extruding a metal sheathing between a point and a die, the point being carried on the front end of a holder supported from the rear of the container and the die being carried in the front end wall of the container, a locating ring with apertures for the passage of metal is held under axial compression between the point holder and the container front end wall. The container B is held in a yoke L connected by columns M with the cylinder J of a hydraulic press having an annular ram G extending into the container around a hollow holder E for the point D. When the ram is in its rearward position as shown, the container is charged with molten lead through an inlet N and on the forward stroke of the ram this lead is extruded between the point D and a die C to form a sheathing around a cable which passes through the holder E and point D. The pressure within the container during the working stroke tends to separate the die and point with consequent non-uniformity in the thickness of the sheathing. To avoid this defect a locating ring P is inserted between the front end wall of the container and the end of the holder E and is placed under compression equivalent to the force that would be exerted between the point and the die by the metal during the working stroke. The ring has apertures Q for the passage of the metal and is placed under compression by means of a screwed sleeve R which presses on the end of the ring. In a modified form, Fig. 2, the holding ring S of the die C is adjustable endwise by means of a screwed sleeve T and is centred by wedge bolts U acting on the conical external surface of a ring Q in which the ring S fits. In a further form, the locating ring is extended to form a sleeve screwing through the front end wall of the container. Specification 229,846, [Class 83 (iv)], is referred to.
