Presses, cylinder-and-pisto; producing part of stroke hydraulically.-In hydraulic presses in which the main ram is brought up to the work by an auxiliary high-pressure ram, the main ram meanwhile drawing in a supply of low-pressure water, all the high-pressure water for the main and auxiliary rams passes through the controlling- valve. The auxiliary ram is made movable and is acted upon on both sides by pressure. The Figure shows the main ram a attached to an auxiliary ram b. The low-pressure check valve m controls communication between the cylinder c and the low-pressure supply. The exhaust check valve j is housed in a casing f, to which are secured the pipe h leading to the working valve, and the pipe k leading to the auxiliary cylinder. A branch l from the pipe k leads to the spring-loaded valve o. High-pressure water fed through the pipes h, k first forces the piston b down, low-pressure water meanwhile filling the cylinder c. When the ram a comes into contact with the work, the pressure on top of the ram b rises and causes the valve o to open, admitting high-pressure water to the cylinder c. In order to raise the ram a, the pipe h is opened to exhaust and high-pressure water fed through the pipe n.
