Abstract
1,230,218. A hammer press. LANGENSTEIN & SCHEMANN A.G. 3 Oct., 1968 [9 Oct., 1967], No. 46987/68. Heading B3H. A machine for forming a workpiece between two reciprocating rams 1 and 2 attached to pistons 8 and 11 which move in cylinders, is characterized in that the machine has a press cylinder space 4a which is bounded on one side by a piston 6a attached to one of the rams, e.g. 1, and a supply line 13 for supplying pressure fluid to this press cylinder space 4a. To retract the two rams 1, 2 a press valve 15 is closed so that no pressurized fluid passes into the press cylinder space 4a. A check valve 17 is opened and a pump 14 supplies pressurized fluid to a retraction cylinder space 12. This retracts the ram 2 downwards which causes fluid to be displaced via a coupling cylinder space 21 and a coupling system 10 into a retraction cylinder space 7. The piston 8 retracts upwards and in so doing compresses the gas in a hammer blow cylinder space 9. To produce a hammer blow an impact valve 18 is opened. The gas compressed in the hammer blow cylinder space 9 forces the piston 8 and consequently the ram 1 downwards, and via the coupling system 10, forces the piston 11 and consequently the ram 2 upwards, fluid being displaced through the impact valve 18 from the retraction cylinder space 12. For a press-forming stroke, the press valve 15 and a travel valve 19 are opened so that pressurized fluid has access via a line 13 to the press cylinder space 4a and can discharge from the retraction cylinder space 7. The pressurized fluid entering the top press cylinder space 4a forces the top piston 6a downwards and hence also the piston 8 and the top ram 1 by means of the stem 20a. The bottom ram 2 does not move during the press forming operation but rests on a fluid cushion in the coupling cylinder space 21 which is shut off by a cock 22. In the embodiment of Fig. 2 a press cylinder space 4b is provided for the bottom ram 2. The press cylinder space 4b is supplied by pressurized fluid by the line 13 during a press-forming stroke so that the piston 12 and hence the bottom ram 2 is forced upwards.
