Abstract
870,598. Hydraulic presses. LOEWY ENGINEERING CO. Ltd. April 8, 1960 [April 10, 1959], No. 12180/59. Class 69 (2). An hydraulic press comprises one or more lifting cylinders 19 and one or more balancing cylinders 21 for returning the movable crosshead 11 of the press to its upper position, the lifting cylinder or cylinders being alternatively connectible to a pressure pump 23 or to an exhaust line, and the balancing cylinder or cylinders being permanently connected to an hydraulic accumulator 25 which is separate from the pump drive. The crosshead 11 comprises upper and lower parts 12, 13 which are joined by columns 14 and movable downwardly by oil pressure from the pump 23 supplied to a cylinder 17 having a ram 18 connected to the lower part 13. The descent of the crosshead is controlled by valves in the exhaust line from the cylinders 19 and by the balancing cylinder which is formed in the ram 18 and is connected to the accumulator 25, the fluid in the balancing cylinder and accumulator being water. The crosshead is raised by connecting the cylinder 17 to exhaust and supplying oil pressure from the pump 23 to the cylinders 19, the accumulator supplying water pressure to the balancing cylinder to assist the lifting operation. The accumulator is connected to a compressor 27 and a pump 26 which fills and replenishes the accumulator through a one-way valve 31 ; a series of test cocks 29 are provided for checking purposes.
