855,636. Hydraulic presses. EISENUND HAMMERWERK G.m.b.H. Feb. 13, 1959 [Feb. 13, 1958], No. 5127/59. Class 69 (2). A multiple-cylinder press comprises conduits 5, 6 supplying fluid pressure to two working pistons 1, 2, two compensating conduits 20, 21 providing a synchronizing device for the pistons, and two slide valves 34, 35 which control the conduits 5, 6 and have pistons at each end, the pistons 32, 36 at one end of the valves being connected to one compensating conduit 21, and the pistons 33, 37 at the other end being connected to the other compensating conduit 20, whereby the slide valves are displaced to cut-off the fluid pressure to the working piston encountering no resistance or less resistance than the other working piston on descent of the ram 3. The compensating conduits are connected to auxiliary pistons 18, 19 in such a way that upon downward movement of one of the working pistons, the pressure in the fluid beneath its associated auxiliary piston is transmitted to the space above the auxiliary piston associated with the other piston to maintain parallel movement of the ram 3. An increase in resistance to the movement of one of the pistons, say piston 1, results in an increase in pressure in the compensating conduit 21 and a conduit 26 connected to the pistons 32, 36, piston 32 being moved to actuate the slide valve 34 to reduce the fluid supply from a pump 9 to the conduit 5 leading to the working piston 2, the piston 36, which has a larger cross-sectional area than the piston 37 at the other end of the slide valve 35 already maintaining that valve in the open position. Similar increase in resistance to working piston 2 results in the supply to piston 1 being reduced. The conduits 20, 21 are connected by check valves 25, 29 to a high-pressure supply consisting of an accumulator 13 and hand pump 12 which also actuate a piston-andcylinder device 10 to raise the ram 3. A manual- or pedal-controlled valve connects the pump 9 to the conduits 5, 6 or to exhaust. Relief valves 38 prevent excess pressure occurring in the system.
